32 Missing After Boat Sinks Off Malaysia

Thirty-two people have been declared missing and five confirmed dead after an apparently overloaded boat carrying Indonesian illegal migrants headed home for Ramadan sank overnight in rough seas off western Malaysia.
Officials said 60 people were rescued or made it to land by themselves after the accident around midnight near Port Klang, Malaysia’s largest port, as authorities intensify the search with nine ships and a helicopter.
“Thirty-two people are still missing. We have found five bodies comprising four men and one woman. They died due to drowning,” said Mohamad Hambali Yaakup, head of the Port Klang office of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.
“Rough seas are making our rescue operation difficult. But we will continue the search until the remaining 32 people are found,” he said.
The boat sank not far from shore, raising hopes that many of the missing had made it to safety on their own, Mohamad Hambali added. Officials believe 97 passengers were aboard the wooden boat, including some children.
Officials had initially said the passengers were believed to be seeking to enter Malaysia.
“From interviews with those rescued, they said they were returning to Aceh (in northern Sumatra). They did not have any travel documents,” said Mohamad Hambali.
“As in previous years, many Indonesian migrants will be leaving Malaysia ahead of Ramadan.” Around two million illegal immigrants — the vast majority of them from Indonesia — are estimated to be working in Malaysia.
Large numbers of them annually return home to Indonesia ahead of Ramadan, which begins around the end of June and will culminate in late July with Eid al-Fitr, Islam’s biggest festival.
Both countries are Muslim-majority.
“We believe the boat was overcrowded and the sea was rough during the incident,” Mohamad Hambali said.
Access to survivors was not immediately available as they had been taken into custody by police.
Authorities said five vessels and a helicopter were searching for survivors. Relatively affluent Malaysia is a magnet for migrant workers from poorer neighbours such as Indonesia, Bangladesh and Myanmar.
Accidents, however, are frequent as thousands annually risk the sea journey in rickety boats to seek low-paying work — typically shunned by Malaysians — on plantations, construction sites and in factories.
Indonesians often add to the risk by choosing to cross the Malacca Strait in darkness to avoid detection.
Last August a boat carrying more than 40 Indonesians heading home for Eid-al-Fitr sank off southern Malaysia.
Malaysian authorities called off a search several days later, with seven confirmed dead and 33 still missing. [AFP]

Abuja-Kaduna rail line 85% complete -Minister

The Minister of Transport, Sen. Idris Umar, said on Saturday that the Abuja-Kaduna Standard Gauge Rail Modernisation Project was 85 per cent completed.
Umar announced this in Doko, Kaduna State at a ceremony to mark the attainment of 100km of track-laying for the railway modernisation project.
The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the Vice President, Arch Namadi Sambo, launched the track-laying at Idu, Abuja, in July 2013.
“Today, in less than one year, the construction has attained over 100km out of 186km. In the next three months, the track will be completed.
“All the materials required are already on ground to achieve the completion and availability of the rail line,” he said.
He said the major constraints encountered in the construction were in Abuja and had been overcome.
He said the constraints of water interference at kilometre 19 and some estates built along the rail line in Kubwa were resolved.
Umar urged the Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Company handling the project to continue with the zeal and determination with which they started.
Mr James Li, Project Manager, CCECC, said there had been steady progress in the construction of the rail line since the commencement of the track-laying.
He said earthwork site clearing had been done and devoid of obstructions or existing structures; while cutting, including rock blasting and filling were at advanced stages.
“About 185 km of the 186.5km route distance has been cleared, 8,597,000m of earth excavated, 403,000m of rock blasted and 6,064,000m of earth filling done.
“Sub structural works have now been completed on all the 26 railway bridges while all the five box bridges have also been fully completed.
“Also 13 out of more than 30 over-pass bridges have been completed while work is in progress on 16 others,” Li said.
He said construction has started on 203 out of the scheduled 206 railway culverts while preparation work was in progress for the commencement of remaining three culverts.
He said more than 330,000 pieces of concrete sleepers had been pre-cast while the required 348 pieces of pre-cast T-beams had been produced.
Li noted that the track laying had reached advanced stage of 110km of track panel laid and 47,356m ballast distributed.
According to the project manager, work has started fully on the seven of the required nine station buildings.

ON LASU FEE REDUCTION

The Lagos State University Students' Union rejects the 34%-60% reduction of LASU Fee as approved by the State Goverment on grounds that the Goverment is not only insincere but has also created confusion amongst the students populace . In 2011 when the fee was to be increased the Goverment gave the breakdown of the new fees, hence, nothing is stopping them from giving us the breakdown of our new school fees. Lagos state Goverment should stop playing politics with the future of LASUites and Lagosians at large. The students' union will not accept any reduction that is less than 67% across board as it was clearly stated in the Goverment proposal that the fees can still be further reviewed downward on compassionate grounds.67% reduction should be approved by the goverment on compassionate ground as stated in their proposal, failure to do this will leave the union with no option but to continue its agitation until our demand on Fee reduction is met by the Goverment. This is our stand. Aluta Continua! Victoria Ascerta!!

Disclosed: What FG Promised The Super Eagles To Win The World Cup At All Cost

Senate President, David Mark
Senate President, David Mark
As the Super Eagles step out on Monday for their first World Cup match against Iran, the players have tabled their grievances to the Senate President, David Mark when he came visiting them on Friday. There are fears that the deficit in agreement for the appearance fee of the players may dash whatever hope Nigerians have for the national team to do well in Brazil 2014.
The players said that they will not accept anything less than the $75,000 about N12.2m appearance fee paid to each of their Ghanaian counterparts by the Ghana Football Association. Also, the Eagles requested that the NFF relocate them from their Victoria Concept hotel in Campinas, which they described as isolated and it makes them look like prisoners unlike other World Cup teams whose Federations lodged them in better and more ideal places.
It was gathered that Senate President thereafter berated the NFF for not promptly settling the issue of appearance fees as was the case with other Federations like the Ghana Football Association. He appealed to the coaches and the players to put aside anything that would constitute a distraction to them in the World Cup and focus on winning, reassuring them of the determination of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to give them the necessary support in the tournament to make Nigeria proud.
NFF President, Aminu Maigari, reportedly had to sign an agreement with the team promising that they will not get anything less than the Black Stars of Ghana. Sports Minister, Dr Tammy Danagogo who was in attendance at the no-holds-barred meeting urged the team to do everything possible to make an impressive outing in the tournament.
Present at the meeting were Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River State; Dr. Danagogo; Senator Bala Mohammed, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT); Chief Edem Duke, minister of culture and tourism; Mr. Boni Haruna, minister of youths and social development; Senator Gumba, Chairman Senate Committee on Sports; Hon. Godfrey Gaiya, Chairman House Committee on Sports, Alhaji Maigari, and other executive members of the NFF.
